MCI Factory

An MCI History Timeline.

The company since its inception.

1976

Megh Cushion Industries was started and incorporated

Megh Cushion Industries Ltd was incorporated in 1976 initially to service the domestic furniture industry and started with manufacturing household furniture such as sofa sets, lounge settees, day beds, etc. to cater for the mass market through trading houses linked to low-income finance.

1977

OEM Production took off

However, with the advent of motor assembly plants in 1977, we shifted our focus on OEM supplies to the local motor vehicle assembly plants that were starting up to supply vehicles to the East African region.

1990

Growth

Starting initially with a workforce of six, the company reached the height of its production in 1990 supplying up to 20,000 trim kits annually to the three assembly plants in Nairobi (General Motors and Fiat), one in Thika (30kms from Nairobi) and one in Mombasa (480 km from Nairobi). By this time the company had a workforce of 350 and were supplying OEM parts to 35 different models of cars, pick-up trucks and heavy commercial vehicles to a mixed assortment of cars from Isuzu, Nissan, Toyota, Peugeot, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Suzuki, Daihatsu, Hino, Niva Lada, Fiat and UD amongst others with smaller volumes.

2000's

Diversification

Following the relaxation of import controls in the late ’90s, instituted by the World Bank in preparing for globalization policies, the OEM market started to dwindle, and local manufacturing of automotive parts suffered due to lack of protection. In early 2000, Megh Cushion Industries prepared to diversify into transport seating with our product range extending from permanent commuter seats to executive inter-city coach seats. In this respect, we import a large variety of bus accessories and seats to supply the requirements of the local bus and coachbuilders. To service the demands of some local bus operators who operate their services in the rural areas with bad roads, we have made heavy duty seats to sustain the damage from such terrain that imported seats from the Asian continent could not survive.

2014

Re-Introduction of OEM Products

Currently, MCI is preparing to re-enter the OEM market with a full range of products for cars and motorcycles to service a large market that is opening up to 135 million people in the East African Community comprising of Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, and Burundi. Ethiopia is another destination of our products for the future.

2015 to Date

Growth & Expansion

The company seeked and raised financing to sustain its growth and expansion plans. Our vision and dream to build a new purpose factory for mass production of motorcycle and vehicle integrations, components and seats to serve Africa. To date we are in operation with the new premise,  fully utilized and we have full time Kaizen practitioners working continually, improving our processes, efficiency and timelines.

"Design is a series of creative choices - it's a collaborative effort, an evolutionary process. You choose your fabrics depending upon what you want to say, then you work with mills to get those fabrics. Through the process, you realize what you want it to be."
